Australia’s fruit and vegetable harvesting industry is a house of cards stacked upon a blindness to suffering, poverty and abuse, writes Sherry Huang | OPINION migrantworkers

The government is considering increasingly unlikely strategies to fill the gaping labour market hole left by migrant workers in agriculture. But the system was broken before the pandemic.

Australia’s fruit and vegetable harvesting industry is a house of cards, stacked upon the willing blindness of Australians to human suffering, poverty, and abuse, imposed by their fellow countrymen.Handy phrases like “migrant worker” reassure the Australian public that the exploitation and abuse they read about is not happening to their neighbours or their children; only to poor foreigners who are accustomed to exploitation anyway and should feel lucky to be abused on Australian soil.

The exploitation in Australian agriculture exists by design. Politicians have created a system to supply farm owners with a steady stream of hard-working human beings with families to sustain, whilst simultaneously blaming jobless Australians for shunning jobs that simply aren’t available to them.
