The Commissioner, Legal, Licensing and Compliance at the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dafe Akpeneye, says the power sector has not been able to stand due to wrong pricing. He spoke to Okechukwu NnodimI think it is important we give proper perspective. The MAP regulation was issued in 2018 and it set a basis for which independent meter provisions would be done for the power distribution companies through third parties called the Meter Asset Providers.

The commission then agreed what the maximum price of a meter would be. And on the basis of that price, the MAPs now did their modeling and placed orders for meters. So the commission had to engage the appropriate arms of government, leading to the directive of the President waiving that 35 per cent and ordering a mass metering programme. The President also directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to support with financing. So the issue of metering is a problem that government recognises and is committed to solving it.Meters are products sold in the market.

So it creates a kind of parity whereby unmetered customers are no longer bearing the brunt and everybody now pays for what they consume. Now, because everybody cannot be metered at the same time, even if you haven’t got a meter, what you are paying will be comparable to what your neighbour is paying. So the customer protection element is there. You would have noticed that the commission has started a very engaging customer and public enlightenment campaign.

Power distribution and service in Nigeria is very poor, yet they want to charge premium price for it , the regulators know this, I have just asked someone now why they have to pay 5k per building to fix an electrical issue with their transformer.

It's the lack of electricity that's the bane. In my opinion, the issue of pricing is secondary as long as the quality of service is guaranteed. Who buys a new car after being told it will be broken down 80% of the time?

Lies. Customer protection in Nigeria? Why can't you people tell the truth for once? We are on extimatrd billing and was paying an average of 10,000 monthly per flat in my area. Last September everyone was billed 40,000 and nobody is ready to hear our case up till now.

Pricing? Is this one serious with his job? He didnt mention corruption but pricing?

Not wrong pricing, but corruption amongst your personnel, improper consumers' enumeration and lack of maintenance of the electricity lines are responsible.

No, corruption is the BANE of the Nigerian Electricity Industry
