GEORGE TOWN: Another market in Kuantan road here has been ordered to close indefinitely after nine Covid-19 cases were detected on Saturday (Sept 18), says the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

"Sanitisation and disinfection work will be carried out and we urge traders to abide by the closure notice. We will carry out a Covid-19 risk assessment together with the state Health Department before deciding when the market will reopen after this."We hope to remind all individuals with 'high risk' status on their MySejahtera app that they are not allowed to enter any public markets or food complexes under the jurisdiction of the MBPP.

On Wednesday , it was reported that two public markets – Cecil Street and Chowrasta – were ordered closed after their traders and stall assistants tested positive for Covid-19. Ten Covid-19 cases were detected at the Chowrasta Market while eight were detected at the Cecil Street Market. Since March last year, several public markets including those at Taman Free School, Batu Maung, Perak Road, Batu Lanchang, Padang Tembak, Bayan Baru, Bandar Baru Ayer Itam and Jelutong on the island were temporarily closed for disinfection following the detection of Covid-19 cases.

On the mainland, the markets in Penaga, Bagan Ajam, Chai Leng Park, Taman Sri Rambai, Kampung Baru, Permatang Tinggi, Taman Bagan, Seberang Jaya, Kepala Batas, Machang Bubok and Bukit Mertajam were also closed after Covid-19 cases were found there.
