Long a staple of western Canada and U.S. agriculture, several Ontario companies are now growing and malting barley, a grain that forms the backbone of beer and whiskey.

Mississippi Mills Malting co-owner Dean Bowes stands outside his barn in early January. Bowes says it's a good time for Ontario maltsters as last summer's drought in Western Canada and pandemic supply issues have made it harder for brewers and distillers to get the grains they normally use.
