Patel has been trying without success to obtain a military contract since 2018, and he’s close to giving up. One reason is keeping up with the certifications that many contracts call for, such as certificates attesting to development capabilities and quality, and each one can cost $50,000 to $150,000 to obtain. He’s only been able to afford them because he has commercial clients.

U.S. adversaries, he said, often leverage commercial tech developed in Silicon Valley, Boston, Chicago and Austin, and use it in combat.
