Chorney-Booth: New Calgary Farmers’ Market makes eating local more accessible for west side of the city yyc

There’s no question that the farmers’ market lifestyle is trendy right now, despite the model having very old-fashioned and traditional roots. That said, Calgarians who don’t live near the other CFM location off Blackfoot Trail South or similar large-scale markets like Crossroads, Granary Road or Fresh and Local Markets and Kitchens in Avenida, likely aren’t in the habit of shopping at a farmers’ market rather than a supermarket.

“The relationship we have with our customers is really integrated,” says Danny Korduner, a CFM board member and owner of Margarita’s Dishes, a traditional Ukrainian food stall that his mother launched in 1986. “Our customers take pride in knowing us – some of them go back to the ’80s and remember my mom from the old outdoor Blackfoot Market. I see people who were kids when we started who have grown up and now have kids of their own that they bring to the market.

“I wanted to get into the Farmers’ Market because it represents who I am. I like to interact with people,” he says. “I want to have a sustainable operation that I enjoy. I want to create a community, not an empire and introduce some food from the heart.”
