When 25-year-old Amy from Sydney’s eastern suburbs experienced a stress-triggered flare-up of her newly diagnosed autoimmune disease, her allocated sick days quickly disappeared. But while the doctor ordered bed rest, she was surprised to learn that working from home — an option available to her colleagues one day per week — was no longer on offer to her. Her workplace gave her two options: come into the office, or take annual leave.

“That was not the case,” Amy said. After her sick days were used up, but she still had a cough that would last for months, she approached her boss to request the accumulated work from home allowance she had been promised. She was told: “No, you’re either sick, or you’re in the office.” “So, I had to take my annual leave,” Amy said. “There wasn’t that understanding with the work from home. My head was clear, I had a laptop, but they were like, you’re either in or you’re out.
