GROUNDUP: International tuberculosis commission praises SA government’s increased investment By Elsabé Brits

Tuberculosis is the leading infectious killer of our time, responsible for 1.6 million deaths worldwide in 2017. This is according toThe international commission was set up to analyse the disease and make recommendations to countries where there is a high TB burden.

The report concluded that a world free of TB is possible by 2045 if there is increased political will and money directed against the disease. But the commission also added: “Although progress has been made in reducing the global burden of TB in the past 25 years, it has occurred at a frustratingly slow rate.

Eight countries in Southeast Asia and Africa accounted for two-thirds of all new cases worldwide in 2017.Commission, South Africa is on track: political leaders from the Ministries of Health and Finance have made an investment case for finding people with TB and treating drug-resistant TB. This resulted in the government doubling annual TB expenditure, with a goal of reducing TB deaths by 87% over 20 years.
