Engine failures in the Airbus A220 may have been caused by a software issue

The airline Swiss briefly grounded its A220s after the third engine failure in as many months. No one was injured in any of the incidents.

Investigators are focusing their attention on recent changes in engine software that may have caused parts that compress air inside the engine to be set in a way that caused mechanical resonance or destructive vibrations, two of the people said. Airbus, which was starting a Pacific tour to promote the A220 on Thursday, had no immediate comment on the investigation.

The head of Pratt & Whitney parent United Technologies said earlier this week it was working on finding the cause and remained confident in the new fuel-saving engine. France's BEA air accident agency has launched a rare appeal for 150 volunteers to help look for a key component from one of the Swiss engines in a wood in eastern France in coming weeks.Pratt & Whitney set off a chain reaction of new aircraft designs or upgrades when it announced its new Geared Turbofan engine in 2008, promising 16% fuel savings. But it has wrestled with a spate of performance or reliability problems and delays.

Ground them until we find out what’s going on. Unlike the 737MAX problem, this cant be fixed by a good stick and rudder pilot.

Boeing vs. Airbus: The Aviation Industry’s Swinging Power BalanceAs Airbus is set to overtake Boeing to become the world’s largest plane maker by deliveries, WSJ explains how two jetliners—the 737 MAX and the A320neo—ended up at the center of the biggest rivalry in the aviation world. Photo illustration: Jaden Urbi The A320neo has zero crashes. What rivalry? 737 Max is over. 😁 Not much of a rivalry anymore now that Boeing has crucified its own name on the MAX and Pegasus. Any level-headed airline board would trust Airbus over those used-car (737/767) salesmen at this point.
