Writing a thank you note is such a simple and easy gesture, we may actually undervalue its power, especially in the business world. A study published last year in the journal Psychological Science finds that there are several ways in which we underestimate the impact of saying thank you.

Second, it seems we often assume that someone is already aware of our feelings of gratitude, and that this might prevent us from making it a regular habit. The study found that recipients were consistently surprised to receive these thank you notes. A CEO who is one of my executive coaching clients handwrites personal thank you notes he presents to each of his direct reports at the company’s annual retreat. In addition to thanking them for their hard work, he highlights specific things they have done to contribute to the company’s success. This thoughtful expression was so well received that each recipient started doing it with their teams as well, creating a ripple effect across the company.
