Australian Tourism Industry Council Executive Director Simon Westaway says the impact of border closures on the tourism industry has been “shattering”, particularly in Queensland.

Qld Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has indicated the state’s borders may remain closed to domestic travel until September, placing the tourism industry at further risk of an economic crisis. Mr Westaway told Sky News domestic tourism contributed about $100 billion of the “holistically” $150 billion visitor economy.

He said NSW’s decision to allow regional travel from June 1 was an example of “good advanced communication and a positive and proactive approach to get us on the roadmap out”. “Another example that if you play this out the right way you’ll get the right results, you’ll get industry behind it, we’ll get the economy moving and we’ll keep jobs,” he said. “It has been really hard going which makes it really so galling to have this crazy debate around when the hard border in Queensland should open.
