a “second round” of letters to six MLMs that sell dietary supplements, shakes, and other personal care products: Isagenix, Melaleuca, Plexus, The Juice Plus+ Company, Vivri USA and Youngevity.to 10 MLMs in April, including Arbonne , doTerra and Rodan & Fields .
Some MLMs, like Plexus and Youngevity, were warned for claims that their products could treat or prevent a Covid-19 infection, when no scientific evidence of their efficacy against coronavirus exists. One health claim cited by the FTC was a social media post from an unnamed Plexus distributor: “#VIRUS_CORONA Worried? I’ve been boosting my immune system for several years with high-quality Plexus supplements. You can too!”
Others, like Rodan & Fields and Melaleuca, got warnings for income claims, like this social media post from an unnamed distributor: “please consider EVERY DIRECTOR at Melaleuca has been getting a paycheck through this entire pandemic/crisis!... If everybody is spending $100/month… @ 20%=$20/customer x 20 customers=$400/month income – FOREVER”
“We urge all companies to follow the requirements of the law and go above and beyond those requirements to ensure that customers and prospective salespeople have and share the most accurate information possible,” the Direct Selling Association, a lobbying and industry group representing MLMS, said in a Fridaythat “we applauded the FTC, and continue to applaud the FTC” for bringing the claims to the companies’ attention, and highlighted recent efforts by the organization to educate MLM...
