Waymo, Cruise, Toyota, Fiat Chrysler, and Uber are some of the leading AV companies looking to participate in the AV TEST Initiative

a voluntary data-sharing initiative this week intended to expedite autonomous vehicle commercialization. The AV TEST Initiative will establish an online platform for participating AV companies to share high-level, on-road test data such as routing information and vehicle counts. Prior to the initiative, AV testing data was only collected in the US at the state level,

Reuters. Leading companies in the AV space including Waymo, Cruise, Toyota, Fiat Chrysler, and Uber will participate in the program.Though high-level data will have limited impact on its own, companies can use the AV TEST portal to identify collaboration or acquisition opportunities.

AV companies may be more amenable to collaborate or be acquired, given the funding and testing constraints related to the coronavirus pandemic. AV startups spend an average of $1.6 million per month, meaning they cost four times as much to operate than typical startups in fields such as healthcare or fintech, according to PitchBook data
