MELAKA: The Melaka government is hoping to save its traditional 'belacan' (shrimp paste) industry by looking into aquaculture techniques to address the shortage of the marine species along the historic city's coastlines.

Norhizam said the netting of the shrimp is also popular among the Portuguese community since time immemorial. "Recently, there was feedback that the shrimp population is on the decline and it could be probably due to extreme weather patterns and the current rainy season," he said.
