Though Workplace won't be exclusive to Portal, Facebook can appeal to a larger enterprise audience by supporting third-party video conferencing services

This expanded audience comes at the cost of exclusivity, since Facebook previously enterprise Portal users to in-house video conferencing services such as Workplace Rooms and Workplace Live.

Portal will therefore appeal to remote workers' desire for an enhanced video conferencing experience as a means of growing the Workplace ecosystem. On a fundamental level, Portal can appeal to remote workers by giving them a dedicated screen for video conferencing, freeing up their primary computer for other tasks.

Facebook also aims to differentiate the Portal video conferencing experience through AI enhancements to the audio and video feed. For instance, Portal's AI-enabled "Smart Camera" feature tracks a user's position to better frame the video feed. "[Portal] takes a lot of the technical friction out of video conferencing — worrying about whether I'm in the right field of view, is the lighting right, is the camera framing me correctly," Collins told us.
