“I know that there is light at the end of the tunnel,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of industry trade group the Broadway League, speaking at a session during the TheaterMakers Summit, an annual gathering of producers, actors and other professionals that concluded Monday.
The conference, which in previous years had been held in person, attracted about 1,000 participants, a record number. Organizers, including Tony Award-winning producer and summit founder Ken Davenport, said the attendance figure spoke of the industry’s eagerness to return to work. Broadway theaters are closed through at least the end of May 2021. Ms. St. Martin and others couldn’t predict a firm restart date. But they said they were buoyed not only by the vaccines in progress, but also hope that a federal relief bill in the works, the Save Our Stages Act, could be passed to provide millions of dollars in support to the beleaguered industry.
Still, Ms. St. Martin cautioned that turning the lights back on won’t be an easy process, since it will cost the industry millions of dollars to get theaters and productions back on track, with casts needing to be re-rehearsed. Concerns also remain that audiences may be hesitant to buy tickets or, in the case of the tourists on whom Broadway relies heavily, might not want to visit New York.
