Cardwell said that workers do not feel valued and resent the management of the rail carriers. The vote against ratification shows members have concerns about the direction of their employers and remain united in working to improve working conditions, he said.
“The result of this vote indicates that there is a lot of work to do to establish goodwill and improve the morale that has been broken by the railroads’ executives and Wall Street hedge fund managers,” Cardwell said. Railroad workers would have been in line to get 24% compounded pay raises over five years if the deal had been ratified. The tentative agreement followedHowever, railroad workers have continued to push for more quality-of-life improvements, including improved scheduling and more paid time off.
The rejection of the tentative agreement results in a “status quo” period where the BMWED will reengage bargaining with the railroads. The status quo period will extend to five days after Congress reconvenes, which is currently set for Nov. 14. Assuming Congress returns to session, a work stoppage would not be able to occur until after Nov. 19.
