SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for October 20, 2023 | SaltWireNEW ANNAN, P.E.I. — A New Annan homeowner says he was devastated after his insurance company discontinued his coverage, leaving him solely responsible for the costs required to repair most of the damage from post-tropical storm Fiona last fall.

“If they've seen an increase in claims for wind, for example, they may look at it and say, 'Think what we're going to do is we may not offer insurance in that area or any other type of area.'” Williams submitted a quote to his insurance company requesting $25,000 to cover the cost of the damage, but it was denied. The agent told him the damage was caused by water which would not be covered by them, Williams said.

Williams had contacted a lawyer to sue the company but said he wasn’t ready to take up the financial cost since he would have to pay to fix his home. Williams has since found a new insurer, but he now pays almost three times more than what he used to pay with P.E.I. Mutual Insurance.
