Insider Intelligence publishes hundreds of insights, charts, and forecasts on the Digital Health industry with the Digital Health Briefing.Nearly half of US hospitals were slammed with fines for high readmission rates in fiscal year 2020 —and as a result, their payments will be cut by up to 3% for each Medicare case in 2021, Kaiser Health News
. The CMS combed through patient data from July 2016 to June 2019 and compared each hospital's readmission rates with the national average to determine penalties.Hospitals are frustrated because they're in a pickle: They're being penalized for high readmission rates, but don't always have the infrastructure in place to avoid readmissions. the penalty program in 2012 in a push to curb readmission rates and the associated costs that fall on the payer.
But ensuring patients remain healthy and out of the hospital creates a catch 22 for doctors: The excess nonclinical work needed to avoid readmissions can prevent doctors from spending the time needed to provide quality care. To readmissions, doctors have to make follow-up calls to remind patients to schedule check-ups, guarantee patients take their meds, and ensure patients have access to transportation to appointments.
