That smell 👀

Despite being described as unattractive and smelly, a lost Lancashire market is still a fondly remembered part of many people's childhood.

Outside, the market was a boxy arrangement of steel and concrete, with a helter-skelter staircase and a slalom of ramps leading out to the hulking car park. Inside it was a warren of cubicles and balconies to peer down at the heads of shoppers below. Jake Boland, who said he worked on the market for many years, also shared positive memories: "[I] started in my teens with Dave and Alan on the outdoor market selling handbags. [I] learned everything I know about hard work from Adrian Livesey and his Sam, with many years grafting at the butchers. Shaped me into who I am today. Loved this place."

Bea Southern posted: "Me too! Remember as you ran down the slope or up the steps from the lower ground, one of the first market stalls always had them macramé baskets hanging up over the railing. I had to watch for mum getting back to there when she 'left' me playing! Ha ha." Trish Breakell posted: "At the time they closed this I was exactly the same [asking] why close the market when that's where people always went for their daily shops. But now I look back and see a concrete outdated building [and] I remember if you went out certain entrance a smell of urine. It wasn't at all nice for today’s standards."
