A project spearheaded by Baptist Health that involves eight other community organizations is working to extend life expectancy in Jacksonville.
Since then, eight other organizations have joined the project: Brooks Rehabilitation, the City of Jacksonville, Florida Blue, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Jessie Ball DuPont Fund, Mayo Clinic in Florida, UF Health Jacksonville and United Way of Northeast of Florida. The national Blue Zones organization grew out of research identifying the areas of the world where people live the longest. The research by National Geographic Fellow Dan Buettner, demographers and others led to a series of best-selling books and eventually the launch of the Blue Zones Project, which brings those ideas down to the local level.
Finding out what needs to be implemented will be the focus of the next several months. Blue Zones Jacksonville will spend that time doing discovery, hosting community meetings and forums. There’s also no need to reinvent the wheel, she said: One of the goals of the research phase is to see what is being done and “what are the things that are in progress that we can add rocket fuel to.”
