Artist behind Blackfly the Restaurant keeps painting, growing brand

Vaughn Cochran can smile every time he sees the Blackfly symbol on one of the ubiquitous stickers attached to things all over Northeast Florida and beyond.Cochran is, above all, an artist. But he's been able to spend decades as a professional artist in large part due to his success in the business world as he and his partners have used numerous platforms to showcase the Blackfly brand and Cochran's art.

When Cochran opened his first Blackfly Outfitters shop almost two decades ago, it was on Aviles Street in St. Augustine. It was intended to be a gallery but then developed into a fly shop and gear store around the art. He later closed the St. Augustine shop to focus on the Jacksonville market and not have the hassles of running two stores.

While the restaurant is successful on its own merits, it's also been a huge success as Cochran's de facto gallery. A large painting by Cochran can go for $12,000 to $15,000, so he knows it's important to get it in front of the right customers. "You do have to be open to opportunities," Cochran said."I'm looking for brand-building opportunities."
