New business taxes: a needed financial lifeline for Santa Clara, Palo Alto and Los Gatos, or a move that will push businesses out of Silicon Valley?

Businesses in Santa Clara, Palo Alto and Los Gatos will be contributing more cash into city coffers in 2023 after their residents approved in November measures that would either introduce or increase local business taxes.

In Santa Clara, City Councilmember Karen Hardy said that while the council was looking for ways to stop up the"That’s embarrassing," she said."[The previous tax] started at $15 and topped out at $500, but it was not indexed to anything, meaning it would never go up and just stayed the same for 30 years."

"We are not supportive of additional taxes on business in any regard as a chamber, but when it comes to hyperlocal taxes that bring the business tax to a more modern scale, the impact has been very mild as far as our membership. The benefits outweighed the impacts for many of us," he said. Shikada said that because of the tax ordinance's provisions, though, the city's findings don't necessarily correlate to the largest payers — and that some of these companies' footprints have already changed. Ultimately, he says, the largest payers for the new tax won't be known until it's implemented.

"Why are the politicians in Silicon Valley not doing everything they can to be a part of improving circumstances for businesses in Silicon Valley," Malesic said."They don’t understand why they don’t want business to survive and strive and thrive."
