A specialty Asian grocer announces layoffs and signals availability of a large San Francisco retail space.

The only San Francisco location of longtime specialty Asian grocery chain Pacific Supermarket is permanently closing this spring and freeing up 27,575 square feet of retail space in search of a preferred grocery tenant.

Pacific Supermarket told employees at 2900 Alemany Blvd. this week it plans to shutter the store, which has served the Excelsior and Ingleside neighborhoods since the early 1990s, effective March 10 and lay off all 59 employees, per a recent public filing. The mom and pop landlords, members of the Paulus family, are searching for a new tenant to begin a long-term lease as soon as April . Their representative, John Poletti of Poletti Realty, told me their preference is for a grocery chain tenant. The neighborhood does not appear to have restrictions on formula or chain retail.

Within the last two years neighborhoods in the Southwestern part of San Francisco have drawn interest from Asian specialty grocers. Japanese convenience giant Daiso, known also for its share of imported snacks, is
