THE famed Kawasan Falls in Badian town, Southern Cebu, which has been closed since last June owing to rehabilitation work, is expected to reopen on October 24 or 25, 2023.
On June 6, Garcia imposed a temporary closure of the well-known site to allow the removal of hazardous debris and abandoned structures from the area. The hazardous materials were left over from the devastation caused by Supertyphoon Odette in December 2021, and the abandoned structures were unauthorized man-made structures that encroached on the river's easement zone, endangering the safety of tourists.
The Cebu Provincial Government will provide each of the 935 canyoneering guides and 26 tour guides with a sack of rice to aid them with their daily needs while waiting for the opening date because they have no other source of income. In order to address the recent issue of some operators failing to pay their dues and taxes to the government, Garcia also instructed the local government unit of Badian to account for all canyoneering and tour package companies operating in Kawasan Falls and have them registered with the Bureau of Internal Revenue .
