The ski season kicks off this weekend to sparse coverage and closed runs, but it's just a taste of what's to come, according to dire new modelling.

Australia's ski industry at risk of collapse as climate change set to slash snow season by up to halfis expected to be slashed by up to half in the next 25 years, according to a study out today.Snow remains thin on the ground at Perisher, with the start of the ski season just three days away.

However, the modelling offered a glimmer of hope if significant action was taken to reduce climate pollution this decade. "This report shows that we'll see that happening more and more frequently, as ski seasons become more erratic and harder to predict due to global warming, until we do something about it."
