The smell of popcorn will once again fill the foyer of an almost century-old cinema in regional Victoria which has been saved by one of Australia’s largest independent film distribution companies. Ballarat’s iconic Regent Theatre abruptly announced its closure in June after 96 years of operation. Management did not elaborate on the reason but said it was “a result of a number of factors” and operations would cease “effective immediately”.

“As the cinema approaches its centennial celebration since opening in 1928, Palace Cinemas will continue the tradition of showcasing blockbuster films cherished by locals while introducing our acclaimed international film festivals and premium upmarket films.” The cinema will reopen on October 3 with $15 standard sessions for Palace Movie Club members in Ballarat to celebrate. Locals rejoiced at the news, with many grateful Palace recognised how important the cinema was to the community.
