Why year 11 student Emily Romano won't be among the almost one million students returning to face-to-face learning in Victoria on Tuesday

Almost a million Victorian students will head to school on Tuesday for the first full day of face to face classes since the state went into lockdown in March.Year 11 student Emily Romano and her daughter Gia attend St Joseph's Flexible Learning Centre in North Melbourne. The 16-year-old has enjoyed remote learning so much that she asked her school if she could continue learning that way this year. The school said yes.

The sustained period of distance education the centre and its students have just gone through has put the school in a position to meet their requests, principal Chloe Hand said. “If our goal as a school is learning outcomes that goal was met much better for some young people through off-site learning, and their engagement was much higher.”Emily Romano enrolled to start her VCAL this year after spending last year out of school, during which time she had daughter Gia, who accompanies her to classes.

In the past two months, remote learning has given her the flexibility to juggle schoolwork with her part-time job at Kmart and her small business creating makeup from natural products. She will continue to come to the Queensberry Street campus three times a week and learn from home on the other two days. The state government has commissioned an independent analysis of the benefits and disadvantages of remote learning, including what tools worked best for disengaged students.
