A multi-million-dollar business lifeline has been unveiled by the Victorian government on the morning after the state was plunged into its sixth lockdown.

Businesses only recently reopened under tough restrictions after Victoria emerged from its fifth lockdown on July 27.

The Department of Health said the infections reported on Friday have all been linked to previously reported cases but were infectious in the community before testing positive. Mr Pakula said the Victorian Treasurer had lobbied Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg for a 50 per cent contribution from the Commonwealth.“It means this package can be in the vicinity of $400 million for a seven-day lockdown which is above and beyond what we've been able to do in the past.

Grants of $5,000 will be lifted to $8,000 for eligible participants who can demonstrate a turnover reduction of 70 per cent. A Commonwealth disaster payment could also be available for residents of Greater Melbourne if the federal government declares Victoria’s capital a hotspot area.
