The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment saw an increase last year in Early Warning Reports (EWRs) for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) companies that may be experiencing trading difficulties or may be ceasing operations in Ireland.

The details are contained in a ministerial briefing document prepared for Simon Coveney in December when he took over the role of Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment.

"There are currently a number of significant employers being impacted by global trading conditionsand the war in Ukraine," it states. The briefing describes data centres as"key aspects of infrastructure which are at the very centre of the digital transition" and adds that the Department will continue to advocate for a balanced and evidence-based approach to data centres. The law compels tech companies to remove illegal online content or else face heavy fines.

The briefing describes the timeline for the implementation of the DSA as"very tight" and sates that a number of workstreams will need to be progressed in parallel.
