The business practices of Spar, one of SA's largest retailers, came under scrutiny in November last year, following complaints by a dozen retailers that they had been badly treated by the group's leadership.

Two months later the grocery chain announced a sweeping board shakeup, with CEO Brett Botten announcing his resignation.
