The investigation will look into the Makana Bulk Sewer Upgrade Phase 1.

The Special Investigating Unit has been conducting a search and seizure operation at the Makana Municipality in the Eastern Cape.

This comes shortly after President Cyril Ramaphosa authorised the SIU to investigate allegations of serious maladministration involving seven tenders in the municipality based in Makhanda, formerly Grahamstown. The investigation will look into the Makana Bulk Sewer Upgrade Phase 1, the electrification project of the greater Makana and the re-appointment of the company MBB Consulting for water conservation.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago says they are looking at tenders that were distributed but the projects were never completed. “The big one is that one the bulk water in Makana, it has been incomplete after they were given extra money by Treasury it is still incomplete but the money has been spent and we also have all of those other projects that were just given without following any process and we’ve got many of them like that. Like I indicate there are many others prior to 2019 and it’s a clear indication that they were just given to their friends and families.
