A Singaporean construction company has been fined over a fatal workplace accident that killed a Bangladeshi worker near the Changi MRT depot. The company failed to ensure the safety of workers from a subcontracted firm.

A construction company, Lum Chang Building Contractors, has been fined S$160,000 for a workplace accident that killed a Bangladeshi worker near the Changi MRT depot in December 2020. The accident occurred when part of a sheet pile struck Shajahan Mohammad, 29, while he was working on an LTA construction site. Sheet piles are used in construction to help retain soil and provide excavation support.

Lum Chang Building Contractors had engaged BLT Geoworks to install and extract sheet piles for a project near Tanah Merah MRT station. Shajahan was a member of the extraction team and was tasked with monitoring the process to ensure the sheet piles were steady and upright. Shortly before the accident, he was standing about 3 meters away from an extraction point when part of the sheet pile struck him.
