A shortfall will exist even if international student numbers drop to as low as 25 per cent of 2019 levels, according to Savills.

Already a subscriber?The number of foreign students could drop by three-quarters on pre-pandemic levels and the current pipeline of dedicated housing for them would still not be enough, according to a new analysis.

Chief executive of student accommodation provider Scape, Anouk Darling, who met with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as part of a Property Council contingent this week, said international students were not to blame for the housing shortage. “The treasurer’s federal budget also shone the spotlight on the student accommodation sector and its critical role in providing student accommodation, to support sustained, controlled sector growth.
