Environmental groups say if cruise lines are revived after the coronavirus pandemic, it should only be under strict new environmental regulations | npomalley

Well before the Ruby Princess came to the attention of Australian police the ship’s parent company, Carnival Corporation, was involved in another scandal on the other side of the world involving something called, colourfully enough, a magic pipe - a home-made device that would eventually cost the company $US60 million in fines.

Carnival was fined $US40 million, the largest fine for environmental crimes in United States history, and placed on a period of probation. Then last year it was hit with another $US20 million fine for further discharges and the dumping of plastics during the probation.

npomalley It’s a destructive industry. They destroy the beautiful places they visit

npomalley I've been on several 10 to 15 days cruises. Always knew disease like gastro was one to watch for, but never had a issue with it on our cruises. I'd only go on another one of there ass a vaccination for COVID-19

npomalley Yes one set of cleaning equipment for each cabin for a start!

npomalley One question I've always had - what is the protocol for garbage disposal on cruise ships?

npomalley Fck the environmental groups! They probably have vegan meals only and no meat too!

npomalley Could? It must. And that includes paying to mitigate their footprint onshore as well as off.

npomalley The cruise industry has shown its disregard for human life and ignored requests from Australia to leave our territorial waters. Some cruises purposefully entered Australia waters with infected passengers on board and lied about infections onboard - cruise industry is ruined

npomalley I wouldn’t go on one even if they started giving them away for free.

npomalley The cruise industry is a pandemic in itself. A good result would be at least half the operators disappearing after this.

npomalley The cruise industry is surely going to be smashed by this? Who’s going to go on one again now it’s starkly clear how quickly illness spreads?

npomalley It is like living in a ghetto being on a ship. Close quarters and a cleaning/hygiene nightmare. It won't matter what the cruise ship staff do if the passengers follow unhygienic practices.

npomalley Agree. Scrap them.

npomalley What does the environment have to do with it?

npomalley NSW should start charging ea passengers $60 tax like airport tax to pre screen health checks on board

npomalley Be surprised if any of them survive this.

npomalley You see how this works people. They'll whip fear and hysteria into the general public, and when the boogeyman is perceived to have eased, they'll roll out evermore restrictions on how you can and can't live your life. Wake up sheep, government IS the virus.

npomalley And they should pay some tax.

npomalley Ban them. A relic from the past. Pumping out as much co2 each ship as a million cars and a breeding ground/carrier for pandemics.

npomalley It will be a 'courageous' person who sets out on a cruise any time soon - 'courageous' used the same way Sir Humphrey Appleby used it

npomalley Are these the same environmental groups that have been predicting the end of civilisation for the last three decades?

npomalley You can't be serious. Of all the things we should have learned from all this is to get rid of these floating, disease ridden , off shore tax haven, polluting, destructive cess pools. cruiseships CoronavirusOutbreak

npomalley I wont get on another cruise unless things change

npomalley And taxation structures. If they're bailed out, they need to change flags from tax havens.
