Over half the guests at the dinners have been business executives and media figures, including the heads of 7-Eleven, Chik-Fil-A and the Atlanta Falcons, while just 14% have been diplomats. The extravagant affairs, featuring specialty cocktails and seasonally curated menus, have been unpublicized and conducted with minimal coordination with the State Department.
Invitations and contact information was sent back and forth through the personal gmail account of Pompeo’s wife, raising concerns among officials that the information could be used to build Pompeo’s private political donor base in violation of the Hatch Act.
