'Success, struggle and survival': Black founders speak out powerfully on the fight against everyday racism in the UK

YSYS was born out of community.

I think about the role technology has played over the last few weeks. Without the person filming what happened to George Floyd, he might just have been another statistic. We actually had to move out of one co-working space we were in while ago. For obvious reasons, we had a disproportionate number of people of color visiting, and the staff were seriously aggravating, always asking: "Are you supposed to be here?" It was shocking.

We've had some success, and the government has agreed to track the demographics of those it supports, before making changes where they're needed - you can't change what you don't track. The multi-generational transmission of racial prejudice and micro-aggressions is the single biggest pandemic that faces humanity. Both individual and systemic racism are so widespread and deep-rooted that it is going to take centuries, potentially millennia to achieve equal opportunity.

We are going to need a multi-faceted strategy to achieve equal opportunity for black people. One aspect of that is the fight against individual racism. I think that will stem from educating children about the importance of racial equality at a young age, to mitigate the huge risk of society sub-consciously conditioning them to believe otherwise.

On my first day at predominately white primary school, I was met with shrills from other children during playtime, who couldn't contemplate the idea of playing with a black girl. I realized then that while I was born in the UK, I would be treated as an Other. This is when the dehumanization began. Many investments are made on gut instinct, and investors want to replicate their past successes. If your last 50 investments have been with straight, white men, it's fair to assume your next 50 will be too. But this shouldn't be the case and investors need to ensure they are actively meeting and investing in black founders.

I think it can start with ourselves aswell being open towards each other without being labelled 'stupid' 'racist' 'homophobic' that isn't going to help anyone people will still have there fears its 2020 social media can be a good thing for us all to be open with each other.

The tech industry in itself needs a do over, the lack of color is atrocious

This is a superb article and having read akalamusic's book Natives more than once, I would suggest he will resonate with this part of the article. This is a THEME to schooling in 🇬🇧, particularly prior to the 00s when the teaching pool became younger and more diverse.

pandering?

Kind of odd their photos on this post don’t match with their headshots in the article what’s up with that?

There’s no apartheid in Essex.

eme

👍🏾♥️

BLACK tech side needs people’s support!! BANK OF AMERICA!! Where is the billion dollar support you tweeted!! And not to squeeze black people out of an opportunity but to LIFT THE BLACK PEOPLE!!!

If you actually read the article, you would read their accounts of experiences they’ve had from early childhood to adult working life!! They have worked hard to get where they are and they’ve had to do it in the face of sometimes overt racism!!!!

A powerful piece on the every day racism faced by Blacks. Brings to the forefront micro aggression that other races like to pretend don’t exist. One resounding takeaway is the need for curriculum to include reference to modern day racism as a current issue not dead with slavery

I think the elitists underestimate the extent to which most Americans do not give a damn. This ceaseless harping on a system skewed in favor of black Americans goes nowhere. Why don't they simply integrate and not make poor lifestyle choices? Brits brought them here. You pay

Yes MLK,Obama,Mandela, Malcolm X, Jesse Jackson, All Sharpton and many more said the same thing. They all got wealthy on their promises on their own people sweat. The problem exists because of them. That's the way they make money and keep their lavish lifestyle .

“we had a disproportionate number of people of color visiting, and the staff were seriously aggravating, always asking: 'Are you supposed to be here?' It was shocking.” 🤣🤦‍♀️

and the world is silent here

That quiet a good gesture

Yea, please talk about you oppression and hardship from racism while you’re also managing YOUR tech businesses. They talk about individuals that had one-off racist incidents, far from systemic racism that everyone thinks still exists.

If racism was an issue these 6 wouldnt be where they are now

If racism was really a problem. You wouldn't have a business.

Oh please !
