Gladys Berejiklian says cafes and restaurants are failing to follow 'COVID-safe' procedures, as figures reveal fewer than 10 businesses have been fined since the start of the pandemic.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is cracking down on businesses who flout COVID-19 rules despite the risk of being fined up to $55,000.

"When businesses choose not to adhere to the checklist it is a risk to everybody," Ms Berejiklian said. "That's why we will be stepping up compliance."Businesses can be fined up to $55,000 for breaching COVID safety warnings and public health orders, with an additional $27,500 penalty for each day the offence occurs. They can also face $5000 on the spot fines, of which nine have been issued to NSW businesses during the pandemic.

Where the restaurant would usually seat 250 people in its 439 square metre space, diners are capped at 100. “It’s an extra cost, yes, but it’s helping us and the public to stop the spread,” Mr Boonchuying said.

Well it’s not the cafes and restaurants I’ve been to...miss those salt and pepper shakers 😢🧂🧂

Sydney is the next 2nd wave covid cesspool

GladysB is correct to be worried. Popular lunch spot in World Square last week: manager & staff appeared utterly oblivious to Social Distancing. Zero reduction in table numbers, nor change of spacing between, nor any hesitation to fill them at lunchtime.😳🦠😳

So many cafes and restaurants not COVIDSafe compliant- no tables moved, people sitting shoulder to shoulder, shared cutlery and serviettes 😱- only give my business to ones trying to do the right thing. COVID19

Is Gladys upset her fine revenue is too low?

Sorry guys but what are you trying to say? I'm confused by your sentence about the premier

Firstly, start TV adverts across all stations explaining what everyone must know including individuals, families & businesses. Time to get smart to stop that second wave.

Have the cases substantially increased in NSW since restrictions were eased?

Maybe the fines being issued are being written off?

So, people not being fined must mean they are breaking the rules..... But lots of fines implies they are following the rules? progressivelogic
