Amazon's Dash Carts could resolve major pain points associated with autonomous checkout

Dash Carts are fitted with cameras, sensors, scales, and displays that track what customers remove from shelves and allow them to shop and pay without physically checking out: Shoppers scan a QR code in the Amazon app and sign into the store, shop normally, enter product information as needed on the cart's display, and then leave through a specialty lane. Payment occurs via the customer's linked card in the Amazon app.

After its 2018 launch, Amazon has opened over 20 convenience-sized Go stores. And though it recently a larger Go Grocery store in Seattle, Amazon and others within the space have struggled to scale the technology up because of the immense cost and effort required to set up larger stores and retrofit existing locations. Further, it has been challenging for players in the space to expand to categories like produce, which is priced by quantity, and alcohol, which requires ID.

The product launch, combined with Amazon's reach, could propel Amazon to the forefront of the space. Though the autonomous checkout space is crowded, challenges with scale have rendered it
