In the eyes of many—including models, designers, stylists and modeling agency bosses—fashion has been neglecting Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) for, essentially, its entire history.

12 min readLindsay Peoples Wagner, editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, and communications consultant Sandrine Charles create the Black In Fashion Council.has faced two momentous hurdles. The first involved transitioning from the physical runway to the digital, due to the coronavirus pandemic. There, the industry succeeded, and even broke ground by hosting the first virtual Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week in July.

Girald, who is Latina and has a fully diverse staff, was recently tossed into the spotlight due to the launch of her"Nude For All" underwear line, which includes seven shades of nude for white, Black women, and everyone in between. She and her company are the exception in the fashion industry, where models say most on-set teams are entirely white, and clothes are rarely made to flatter nonwhite bodies.

"To be inclusive is not just to have a Black model, but also a makeup artist that doesn't make you look ashy, or a hair stylist that knows how to deal with thick, curly hair, or a photographer that knows what lighting looks good on your skin," she said. Melani, who is signed to Willcox's agency, said she and her fellow models of color see the company's recent claims about understanding and supporting Black talent as a"performance." She said that of the 80 or so models signed to the agency, only eight are of color, and all of them are either"mixed or light-skinned and with curly hair -- because apparently that's what white people think all Black girls look like.

We don’t want 2 see ugly Ppl in fashion!!

Y’all have black history month, Juneteenth, black TV stations, separate genra’s on HULU, Netflix, STARZ, HBO, radio stations, colleges & fraternity/sororities, black only churches & organisations, black only scholarships, etc. It seems the black community WANTS segregation.

That is just stupid

Actually I have seen quite a few interracial couples featured in advertisements on bus stops, television, magazine, etc. More than in real life, so I wonder if it is made up.

No one wants 2 see ugly Ppl in any Industry! Eye damage & upset stomachs.

Hell..just make fashion industry black like many tv commercials, basketball, football & so on blacks bitch about & now just keep few token whites around.!!.you all know it’s true cause you talk or whisper bout it all time..”aren’t there any white guys on their bench”..sh..shh.?!

😂 Who is paying these prostitutes like ABC to run not stop racism?! Soros? Russian? China? Obviously someone trying to destroy us. Luckily only the dumbest SOBs would believe any of this TrashNews since America is most mixed and accepting in its history! ABCIsRacistCentral

What about the over-representation in music and sports?

Signal harder!

BIPOC lives matter !

BIPOC is not a thing.

Are black and indigenous people not people of color?

KingBorn8 We are not doing BIPOC! STOPBIPOC

You forgot to include: and pushing an unrealistic picture of women and beauty and allowing designers to create this fantasy world.

This means opportunities for the creation of more Black brands and modeling agencies to support their products. Black people are diverse within their diversity. Find a need and fill it is the American way.

To adopt these fashions is cultural appropriation and any white person sporting these fashions is a bigot and a racist.

Lol BIPOC

I’ll finally be able to get that lip plate I always wanted.

Although I am compassionate and understand this, the reality is that this is a marketing industry and they have to market to the demographic that gives them the best return on their money.

STOP the lies. Many Black celebrities set the fashion trend in this country. Even with non-celebs, most have very clean, new tennis shoes and usually a unique outfit. Race-baiting is 'for the birds.' Celebrate all foreign contributions to US fashions (i.e. France).

They have their own fashion. The article speaks as if Fashion as such were a white monopoly. The American press is one day going to destroy this country.

How so; the industry controlled by the woke crowd who lecture us everyday? Could it be that these people are the real racists?

larrydaliberal
