The West should keep the bulk of its sanctions in place and maintain its military preparedness “until the Kremlin respects the rights of its people, and of those in other countries”, writes Russia’s former foreign minister in a guest essay

of Ukraine’s resistance and the amount of Western support it receives will determine how Vladimir Putin’s war there ends. Negotiations should be left to Ukraine and Russia, without Western interference. Discussion should also commence on what post-war Europe will be like. One of my country’s, and indeed the world’s, great writers, Leo Tolstoy, believed that nations with higher moral resolve win in war. And so they do in peace.

Ukraine’s courageous fighting boosts its national identity and international standing. Volodymyr Zelensky has emerged as a great war leader. But that is no reason for complacency. Ukraine is not in theat this tragic hour in part because it could not meet Western standards on law and order and on anti-corruption measures. It should make a greater effort to reform after the war in order to open Europe’s doors.

The prospect of a westernising, democratic and prosperous Ukraine is the nightmare of the Putin regime because it will be a powerful motivation for Russians to follow suit. In order to change, however, the country must be recognised for what it is—a nation under a belligerent and ruthless dictatorship—and treated by the West accordingly.

America and its allies at last imposed tough sanctions on Russia in recent weeks because it again violated the civilised norms of behaviour in Ukraine. Yet useful idiots or pseudo-experts on Russia who hold sympathies for autocratic leaders, such as Tucker Carlson on Fox News, are pushing for a prompt return to business as usual with Russia and its oligarchs. If they succeed, the sacrifices of Ukrainians and the discomfort of Western taxpayers will have been for nothing.

Andrei why don't you enlighten on soviet past -in brutal words... Just advise might not be sufficient

You people in west are late to read all soviet commentators.. Better act rather than getting confused in finding any allies from soviet sink

As long as Putin is in the Russian government, there will no be way investments will return to Russia and the latter will be isolated. What would be the point of financing a regime that murdered thousands of innocent lives? Who will pay the cost of rebuilding Ukraine?

He makes a valid point.

banmrbeastfornoreason

this is very much truth.

Wonder if Mr. Kozyrev renounced his Russian citizenship. Supposedly he resides in Miami FL with his family. As for aggression, it has been around worldwide for centuries.

That’s why part of our terms to remove sanctions has to include Russia allowing Ukraine, and anyone else who wants to, to join NATO if NATO accepts them. And then NATO has to immediately admit Ukraine.

Don’t you worry. Chekhov. Returning to Normal is not happening. ✋

Annalist defector's opinion? Very valuable!

So, be careful with Germany and France. This has happened before.

B/s!

In fact, he’s not Russian. He’s an American

Soory to say. . . he's probably correct.

I'm sure Putin has suddenly adopted a more frugal approach as a consequence. These sanctions will certainly affect ordinary Russians, as always is the case.

The west should stop their adventures, stop NATO expansion, stop invading other countries, then they are allows to judge others. Putin is a criminal, so are other western leaders. A life is a life, white European, brown middle eastern or black African! Stop the propaganda

How sustainable are these sanctions especially in this global village? Maintaining sanctions on Russia will likely to ricochet as Western Europe's economies will scream coz majority of their industries&commerce depend on Russia's endowments.
