Icasa's State of the ICT Sector report shows that revenue growth in telecoms sector does not match employment numbers.A report by the communication regulator states that fixed-line phone users are on the decline while mobile revenue is up.However, the employment dip in the telecommunications sector does not match the increase in revenues.
The telecoms sector, which includes large JSE-listed cellular network companies such as MTN, Telkom and Vodacom, led the decline, with a 35.8% dip in employment. While the telecommunications sector experienced a slowdown in employment, there was growth in the income by companies, as key income segments such as service revenue, internet and data revenue shot up over the period. The increases are in line with the increasing growth that has been flagged by telecom companies since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
