The small business council has defended its pact with unions on multi-employer bargaining and will clarify its position on industrial relations via a new statement of intent.
He said COSBOA would review its consultation approach with members, in a tacit concession it may not have consulted with members widely enough.after some members were blindsided by the peak body’s memorandum of understanding with unions that has paved the way for an expansion of multi-business pay bargaining.
Some COSBOA members said they were upset that chief executive Alexi Boyd had been co-opted and duchessed by the government for Labor’s political gain.The memorandum seeks to pursue ways to simplify the workplace system for small businesses that are typically locked out of enterprise bargaining due to lack of resources, including by exploring multi-employer bargaining where suitable.

The only thing we agreed to [with the ACTU] was speak to a view of finding what was best for small business. “When I met with Sally McManus – and I’m the most cynical person on earth – when someone says to me how can we help small business, that was the olive branch. I’m like, ‘why don’t we have a discussion on that,’” he said.
