And yes, Ukrainians are in a war to protect their independence and identity, but it is much more than just religion. Ukrainians have embraced democracy, freedom and Western values. They do not want to be vassals of a Soviet-style regime. And Russia under Putin operates in a Soviet style. While Germany reconciled with its Nazi past, Russia never reconciled with its Soviet past and continues functioning with many of the oppressive Soviet tactics. It is not something Ukrainians want.
