Federal funding for Black business owners a ‘beacon of hope’ — but there are barriers

By partnering with Business Development Bank of Canada and financial institutions, nearly $300 million in loans were made available through the program.

Fergus said the point of the program is to help Black Canadians to pursue entrepreneurship on the same footing as other Canadians.Story continues below advertisement Over the years, academics and advocates have pointed out the barriers Black people face navigating financial institutions.A 2021 study by the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the BDC, identified access to capital, skills for advertising and promotion and personal development and mentorship as the most pressing needs facing Black business owners.

Black people need training wheels. Apparently.

80% of businesses fail, started by highly motivated people on their own. Governments and NGO's somehow trying to distribute federal dollars, I think will only increase the percentage of businesses failures. However, a lot of money will be dispersed throughout the black community

A program based on an event in the US imported into Canada. How predictable.

Poor journalism

How can i change my race to black… or the colour of my skin provided that I don’t have the same money as MJ (no disrespect intended for the great man).

Why don't you say what it is, another racist policy. How disgusting to think that people can't achieve their goals without a handout because of the colour of there skin.

Barriers that everyone faces

Can't wait until the Asians Only funding, water fountains and spaces on buses come too. Who gets these perks after than? It's always a win when society fractures by race.

If Blacks are no good at business like you say, perhaps we subsidize extra business classes for them.

lol, 'journalist'.

More racist garbage from 'progressives'.

So patronizing.

Oh, and Sean? Because you are a racist, I think I would specifically pass on your business. Thanks for telling us you are, though. cdnpoli

Pitiful.

This program is so racist! How would people react if there was a White Business Owners Association?

Are black people tired of being props and accessories yet? Seriously if I was black I would be sick of being infantilized like this.

Racism in 2023 out in the open.

Lord knows that blacks don't have the intelligence, talent or determination to make it on their own without white help, right? 😂

Seems racist

So the article didn't mention any specific barriers. The person also seems to think everyone else automatically is approved for a loan or knows how to navigate that system. Most people don't own a biz.

Can I identify as black?

Soft bigotry of low expectations?

I identify as black. Where do i sign up?

Wow, shocking that handouts lead to whiners demanding more handouts. Who could have predicted?

So everyone else in business can struggle except the blacks

I am close to be black, I am grey, can I get some?

That’s discrimination. Plain and simple .

Wow, if this isn't considered racism I don't know what is 🤣

More institutionalized racism.

Racist!

When did blacks stop being referred to as Canadian Being led to believe that all blacks were enslaved Demeaned to a color Purposely discriminated upon bc that's what Liberals did as slave owners and that's what they doing now as world leaders Reliving their best era in history

Racist

I'd like to see the color wheel that is included with the application. Does the shade determine the interest rate? Now what if I identify as Black? Does that only count with sexuality?

Liberal closet racism on full display
