Nigerian Petroleum Company, NNPCL Confirms That CEO Mele Kyari, Chief Financial Officer, Ajiya Collect Gratuities While In ‘Active Service’Gratuity is a sum of money paid to an employee at the end of a period of employment.
“Isn’t this corruption? Our Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari and the Chief Financial Officer, Umar Ajiya paid themselves gratuity running into billions of naira while still in active service which is against the public service rules,” the source had said. “They are both running NNPC as their personal company because nobody is checkmating the both of them.”
Reacting to the story, Garba Deen Muhammad, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPCL confirmed the payment of gratuities to the duo and others.President Muhammadu Buhari had in July 2022 unveiled a new Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited which changed the oil firm from a wholly state-run entity to a commercial oil company, limited by shares.The NNPC completed its incorporation in September 2021 weeks after the PIA was signed into law by President Buhari.
The statement read, “The general public may recall the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act and the successful transition of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to a commercially driven National Energy Company, the NNPC Limited. “Pursuant to the provisions of the Act, appointment of the CEO and CFO of NNPC Limited by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is on the basis of distinct terms and conditions of Service including tenure, employment benefits and termination. The appointment of CEO and CFO is not a career posting.
