The iconic West Side Market has rich history as well as beautifully engineered architecture. In 111 years, though, history doesn't have enough Black faces, said one panelist.

Marilou Suszko, author, “Cleveland’s West Side Market: 100 Years and Still Cooking”“The market was meant to be a symbol of the entire city,” said Taxel, “to create a sense of civic pride in immigrants and unite them as Americans.”

“In that era, it was not the place to be [for Black people] if you wanted to stay alive,” she said. Then, breaking the appropriately awkward tension, she added, “Now that I can go, I’m still not going. I need to learn how to cook.”were floated. When the discussion ended, a handful of attendees reminisced about their experiences with the market as well. While tales of shopper adventures and vendor life in the iconic building may sound romantic, it was still a place of work.
