Van Zyl-Meyer says one of the favourites, and the runner with the fastest time is Peter Kimeli Some, who has a personal best marathon time of 2 hours 5 minutes and 38 seconds. The Elite Men’s field is dominated by Kenyan and Ethiopians, though also includes Motlokoa Mkhabutlane from Lesotho and Morocco’s Mohammed Ziani.
Van Zyl-Meyer is just as excited by the women’s field headed by Kenya’s Celestine Chepchirchir and Abeda-Tekulu Gebremesekel from Ethiopia. She says that the Marathon will also act as the SA National Championships, so may top South Africans runners will be competing, including elite athletes like Elroy Gelant, Lusapho April, Melikhaya Frans, Lebo Dinah and her twin sister Lebogang Phalula and Mari Rabie.
