A Midtown roadway has become the site of a new homeless encampment after the abatement of a large camp next to the Cuddy Family Park, causing concern from raising concerns among nearby land and business owners.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Midtown roadway Fairbanks Street has become the site of a new and growing homeless encampment following the abatement of a large camp next to Cuddy Family Park.

Several people living off of Fairbanks Street between East 42nd to East 40th Avenues said on Monday that they — and many others living there — moved to the area when the encampment near Cuddy Family Midtown Park was abated. “Virtually everyday, we’ll have people sleeping in the doorway,” Borchardt said. “Everything that’s left out will be stolen.”

“For the city, I think this is out of sight, out of mind,” Borchardt said. “It’s going to be a problem no matter where they go — this is probably the least problematic of many locations.”Alexis Johnson, Anchorage’s Housing and Homeless Coordinator, called the emerging encampment at Fairbanks Street “a very sticky situation” — one that she said isn’t explicitly outlined in municipal code, making the city’s options limited.
