The CEO of $12 billion biotech Sarepta says the office may 'become an anachronism' as remote work upends the biotech industry

The biotech industry — though unique in that it requires some employees to conduct research onsite —Doug Ingram, the CEO of Sarepta Theraputics, admits he was somewhat of a "dinosaur" about letting employees work remotely.

When things go back to normal, or at least, when people return to the office, Ingram says we can all become more efficient by using virtual tools. And that means paring back meetings, letting employees work more flexibly — coming into the office only when they need too — and scaling back business travel.

"I really think there's a place where the office of the past starts to become an anachronism," he said.David L. Ryan/The Boston Globe/Getty Images Employees will still need to network at conferences. But the company may be able to reduce its conference schedule and send fewer employees — reducing costs across the board.
